Strategic Objective 1: Develop the Potential of the Local Community
...to engage local communities in the target area (through capacity building)...
Project Outline: This project worked in two phases to increase community participation in the delivery of local regeneration programmes by addressing the shortfall in the capacity of local groups to develop quality projects alongside statutory sector organisations. The project provided dedicated professional support in the process of developing a thorough and robust application for project funding. Two regeneration development officers were employed to offer practical and sustained support to communities (both geographic and interest) to help them benefit from the Objective 2 programme. They improved the quality of applications from local groups, making better use of partnership time, and leading more projects to success. This has led to greater resident 'hands on' involvement with the regeneration process.
Project Outline: The People Power project was awarded funding to provide additional capacity and resources to the Neighbourhood Renewal teams working in the Objective 2 area of Bristol. The project helped raise confidence and increase skills amongst people living in the socially and economically disadvantaged areas of central and south Bristol.
Project Outline: The project raised the confidence and skills of parents living in the whole Objective 2 Programme area. Employing thirteen local people it provided training to over a thousand local people, increasing their employment prospects and their confidence to go job-seeking.
Project Outline: Inns Court - A Community in Control appointed a Community Development Worker to work with and support the residents of the Inns Court Estate around issues such as personal safety, crime, employment and training.
Project Outline: In June 2001, a group of Silai students and staff researched and produced a number of environmentally friendly baby products - a cotton reusable nappy, and other associated products. The nappies and accessories were made in limited quantities and successfully piloted at a specialist retail outlet (Born, on Gloucester Road) which stocks other brands of reusable nappies largely imported into the UK. During 2002, Born sold all the Silai nappies that it bought. Production stopped to give the steering group time to establish themselves as a social enterprise and a separately registered company, and raise funds to develop their product lines to maximize market potential.
Project Outline: The centre provides legal advice on charity law to small and medium sized community groups. It also provides both general and bespoke training courses on charity law and the roles and responsibilities of management committee members. It has helped to develop the potential of the local community by assisting community groups to develop their potential to provide services and further enable committee members to access funding and to run their organisations more effectively.
Project Outline: This project increased the level of parental involvement in the education of their children. Continuing the work done with BrEAZ Parent Co-ordinators project, new jobs have been generated for Parent Co-ordinators for schools in the Community at Heart area. These co-ordinators opened pathways through which the parenting community has involvement in their children's schools.
