Projects Being Funded

Strategic Objective 1: Develop the Potential of the Local Community
...to engage local communities in the target area (through capacity building)...

Bristol Community Engagement Project Service Provider: Bristol Regeneration Partnership

Project Outline: This project worked in two phases to increase community participation in the delivery of local regeneration programmes by addressing the shortfall in the capacity of local groups to develop quality projects alongside statutory sector organisations. The project provided dedicated professional support in the process of developing a thorough and robust application for project funding. Two regeneration development officers were employed to offer practical and sustained support to communities (both geographic and interest) to help them benefit from the Objective 2 programme. They improved the quality of applications from local groups, making better use of partnership time, and leading more projects to success. This has led to greater resident 'hands on' involvement with the regeneration process. People Power Service Provider: Bristol City Council

Project Outline: The People Power project was awarded funding to provide additional capacity and resources to the Neighbourhood Renewal teams working in the Objective 2 area of Bristol. The project helped raise confidence and increase skills amongst people living in the socially and economically disadvantaged areas of central and south Bristol.

It has built upon the skills and knowledge of almost 700 local residents of Ashley, Easton and Lawrence Hill and encouraged them to take part in implementing Bristol's Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy. Through People Power, the local community became actively involved in developing and managing over 40 local community regeneration activities and projects.
BrEAZ Parent Co-ordinators Service Provider: Bristol Education Action Zone

Project Outline: The project raised the confidence and skills of parents living in the whole Objective 2 Programme area. Employing thirteen local people it provided training to over a thousand local people, increasing their employment prospects and their confidence to go job-seeking.

The project also boosted the confidence and ability of local parents who engaged with and influenced their child's education. Parents were encouraged to take up new opportunities for training and community participation and through these new activities, became active partners in their children's education.
St Werburghs Community Association Project Development Service Provider: St Werburghs Community Association

St Werburgh's Community Centre - Click to Enlarge Project Outline: The St Werburghs Community Centre on Horley Road is a well used local facility and provides a meeting space and focus for activities in both the local and wider community.

Due to significant structural problems, the facilities at the St Werburghs Community Centre were unsuitable and inadequate for the community groups that used them. In response to these problems the St Werburghs Community Association developed plans to rebuild the centre. The new Centre will be designed and built in order to meet the needs and aspirations of the community. The Objective 2 funding is being used by the Community Association to finalise these plans and to raise money to fund the new building.
Inns Court - A Community in Control Service Provider:  Bristol City Council

Project Outline: Inns Court - A Community in Control appointed a Community Development Worker to work with and support the residents of the Inns Court Estate around issues such as personal safety, crime, employment and training.

The Community Development Worker supported the work of the Mede Community Centre and the development of a residents group in Inns Court. They work on building self-esteem and confidence in the community and assisted residents in seeking training and employment opportunities.
Silai Nappy Company Service Provider: Silai Nappy Company

Project Outline: In June 2001, a group of Silai students and staff researched and produced a number of environmentally friendly baby products - a cotton reusable nappy, and other associated products. The nappies and accessories were made in limited quantities and successfully piloted at a specialist retail outlet (Born, on Gloucester Road) which stocks other brands of reusable nappies largely imported into the UK. During 2002, Born sold all the Silai nappies that it bought. Production stopped to give the steering group time to establish themselves as a social enterprise and a separately registered company, and raise funds to develop their product lines to maximize market potential.

The aim of this project was to provide the Silai Nappy Company with funding to carry out this period of research and development. The project has been completed and has successfully helped support the establishment of a new fully self-sustainable community business.
Community Groups Advice Service - ABLC Service Provider: Avon and Bristol Law Centre

Project Outline: The centre provides legal advice on charity law to small and medium sized community groups. It also provides both general and bespoke training courses on charity law and the roles and responsibilities of management committee members. It has helped to develop the potential of the local community by assisting community groups to develop their potential to provide services and further enable committee members to access funding and to run their organisations more effectively. Parent Co-ordinators in the Community at Heart Area. Service Provider: City Academy

Project Outline: This project increased the level of parental involvement in the education of their children. Continuing the work done with BrEAZ Parent Co-ordinators project, new jobs have been generated for Parent Co-ordinators for schools in the Community at Heart area. These co-ordinators opened pathways through which the parenting community has involvement in their children's schools.
